İkitelli City Hospital — FM200 Gas Suppression Project

On this 1,000,000 m² project, roughly 160 critical spaces — from server rooms to medical-imaging and power-distribution areas — were protected with FM200 (HFC-227ea) clean-agent suppression. In these sensitive spaces where water is unsuitable, A-Pro Engineering delivered the full scope turnkey: from NFPA 2001-based design through electro-mechanical installation to commissioning.

İkitelli City Hospital — FM200 clean-agent fire suppression project

City hospitals are vast, mission-critical buildings that cannot be protected by a single fire scenario. Under one roof they combine intensive-care units, operating theatres, data centres holding millions of records, medical-imaging equipment, and UPS and power-distribution rooms that keep everything running. In some of these spaces, water would extinguish the fire while endangering both the patient and expensive equipment.

On the İkitelli City Hospital project, A-Pro Engineering took responsibility for protecting exactly these sensitive areas: across a facility built on 1,000,000 m², roughly 160 critical spaces were protected turnkey with FM200 (HFC-227ea) clean-agent suppression, including electro-mechanical infrastructure works.

Why Clean Agent, Not Water?

Across the hospital, sprinklers and wet systems protect the majority of occupied areas. But in certain spaces water is not the solution — it is a new problem:

  • Data and server rooms — water permanently destroys the hardware that holds all patient records and hospital automation.
  • Medical-imaging (MRI/CT) control and technical rooms — multi-million-lira devices are highly sensitive to water and moisture.
  • UPS and battery rooms, main electrical distribution boards — in these power-continuity spaces water is both ineffective for suppression and an electrical hazard.

In these areas clean-agent suppression stops the fire without residue, without electrical conductivity and within seconds — protecting both the equipment and process continuity.

Why FM200 (HFC-227ea)?

FM200 is an NFPA 2001 clean agent. It stops fire by rapidly absorbing heat and breaking the chemical chain reaction, without lowering oxygen to dangerous levels. Its key strengths:

  • Fast discharge — typically reaches design concentration within 10 seconds, tackling the fire early.
  • Occupied-space safety — the design concentration is kept within the safety threshold (NOAEL) for safe use during evacuation.
  • Residue-free — no post-discharge residue, corrosion or clean-up burden; the space can be returned to service quickly.
  • Compact storage — the agent is stored as a liquid in pressurised cylinders, suitable for tight technical spaces.

Agent quantity and cylinder banks were sized per space, evaluating volume, enclosure integrity and hazard class individually.

Scope: ~160 Critical Spaces

Each of the roughly 160 spaces was treated as an independent suppression scenario. For every enclosure:

  • net volume and leakage areas were determined,
  • the required agent quantity was calculated to NFPA 2001,
  • the cylinder bank, discharge nozzles and pipework were sized,
  • a detection and discharge scenario was designed specific to the space.

Turnkey Electro-Mechanical Delivery

A-Pro Engineering carried the project not merely as a gas-system supplier, but turnkey:

  1. Engineering design — per-space calculation, layout and discharge design.
  2. Procurement — agent, cylinder banks, nozzles, detection and control panels.
  3. Electro-mechanical works — pipework, support systems, electrical and control wiring.
  4. Installation — cylinder banks, nozzles and detection equipment in each space.
  5. Testing and commissioning — room-integrity, functional and scenario tests.

Detection, Discharge and Commissioning

To trigger suppression at the right moment, each protected space was designed with cross-zoned detection: suppression only activates once mutually confirming detectors verify the fire, preventing accidental discharge. Audible-visual alarms, a pre-discharge delay and manual release/abort stations were integrated for personnel safety and space management. During commissioning, room-integrity (enclosure) tests verified the agent’s required hold time.

Outcome

At İkitelli City Hospital, critical spaces where water would create risk were secured with FM200 clean-agent suppression — from design to commissioning, delivered from a single source. The project reflects A-Pro Engineering’s experience with gas suppression at city-hospital scale (including Elazığ City Hospital): applying the right agent, in the right space, to code, in high-volume, multi-space facilities that demand uninterrupted operation.

Frequently asked questions

Why was gas suppression used instead of water at İkitelli City Hospital?+

In spaces such as server and data rooms, medical-imaging (MRI/CT) control areas, UPS/battery rooms and main electrical distribution boards, water causes permanent damage to electronics and jeopardises uninterrupted patient care. Clean-agent suppression such as FM200 is preferred because it extinguishes very quickly, leaves no residue and is electrically non-conductive.

Is FM200 (HFC-227ea) safe in occupied spaces?+

FM200 is an NFPA 2001 clean agent. Its design concentration is calculated to stay within the human-safety threshold (NOAEL) and it typically discharges within 10 seconds. A properly designed FM200 system provides safe suppression within the time needed to evacuate personnel.

How many spaces were protected on the project?+

Across the 1,000,000 m² project, roughly 160 critical spaces were protected with FM200 gas suppression. For each space the volume, enclosure integrity and hazard class were assessed individually to size the agent quantity and cylinder banks.

Was the system installed turnkey?+

Yes. A-Pro Engineering delivered the full scope turnkey — engineering design, procurement, electro-mechanical infrastructure works, installation, testing and commissioning.
