How to choose the right fire suppression system
In any facility, a fire suppression system is not a single product; it is an engineering solution chosen according to the fire load of the protected space, the materials inside it, and the thresholds mandated by the Turkish Fire Code (BYKHY)and relevant NFPA standards. What are the types of fire suppression systems?
Fire suppression systems fall into five main types according to the hazard being protected:
- Water-based suppression (sprinkler & water mist): Suppresses fire by cooling with water; the most common solution for general buildings, car parks and warehouses.
- Gas suppression (FM200, NOVEC 1230, IG01 Argon, IG541 Inergen, CO₂): Extinguishes with clean agent leaving no residue; for sensitive spaces such as data centers, server rooms and switchgear.
- Foam suppression: Blankets the fuel surface to prevent vaporization; for fuels, petrochemicals and tank farms.
- Kitchen hood suppression: Saponifies cooking-oil fires with a wet-chemical agent; mandatory in commercial kitchens.
- Fire detection & alarm: Detects fire early with smoke, heat and flame detectors, raises the alarm and triggers suppression.
Water-based suppression (sprinkler & water mist)
Water-based fire suppression systemsextinguish fire by cooling and are the most common solution. With sprinkler, ESFR, water spray cooling and water mist variants, they are designed for general buildings, car parks, industrial plants and warehouses to NFPA 13 / EN 12845. In freeze-prone spaces such as car parks, a dry-pipe design is used.
Gas suppression (FM200, NOVEC, Inert)
For sensitive spaces damaged by water, gas fire suppression systemstake over. FM200 (HFC-227ea), NOVEC 1230, IG01 Argon and CO₂ clean-agent solutions protect data centers, server rooms, switchgear and archives without residue, designed to NFPA 2001.
Foam suppression
Where flammable liquids, fuels and solvents are present, foam fire suppression systemsare used. Foam blankets the fuel surface to stop vaporization and re-ignition — critical for tank farms, LNG and loading facilities.
Kitchen hood suppression
For range and exhaust-duct fires in commercial kitchens, kitchen hood suppression systemsare mandatory under BYKHY Article 57. The wet-chemical agent saponifies cooking oil to suppress the fire and prevent re-ignition.
Fire detection & alarm
The brain of every suppression system is the fire detection and alarm system. Smoke, heat and flame detectors identify the fire early, raise the alarm and trigger suppression. Only when detection, suppression, smoke control and evacuation are integrated as one scenario is the system truly safe.

How do you choose the right fire suppression system?
The choice depends on the fire load and hazard class of the protected space, whether the contents tolerate water or gas, occupant density, and the thresholds mandated by the Turkish Fire Code (BYKHY) and relevant NFPA standards. Sensitive spaces damaged by water (data centers, archives, switchgear) use gas; fuels and solvents use foam; general buildings use water-based (sprinkler) systems.
Which buildings require a sprinkler system?
Under the Turkish Fire Code, automatic sprinklers are mandatory in buildings exceeding certain height, floor-area and occupancy thresholds — for example enclosed car parks with more than 20 vehicles or over 500 m², high-rise buildings, and accommodation facilities above defined room/bed counts. The exact threshold is set per occupancy class during design.
What is the difference between gas and water suppression?
Water systems extinguish by cooling; they are cheap and common but damage electronics and sensitive equipment. Gas systems (FM200, NOVEC 1230, IG01 Argon, CO₂) suppress with clean agent by removing oxygen or interrupting the chemical chain, leaving no residue — ideal for data centers, server rooms and switchgear.
Is a kitchen hood suppression system mandatory?
Under BYKHY Article 57, an automatic wet-chemical suppression system is mandatory on hoods and exhaust ducts of high-use commercial kitchens. It suppresses cooking-oil fires through saponification and prevents re-ignition.
Are detection and suppression installed separately?
No, they are designed together. The detection and alarm system detects the fire early, raises the alarm and triggers suppression. In a correct installation, detection, suppression, smoke control and evacuation are integrated as a single scenario.
