Suppression in a Seismic Region: Structural Resilience
Elazığ is in a first-degree seismic zone. However well a suppression system is designed, it is useless if, during an earthquake, the pipework fractures, the cylinder bank topples or the supports fail. So on this project:
- pipework and distribution manifolds were sized to seismic support/bracing principles,
- cylinder banks were anchored and restrained against overturning,
- details were resolved so that movement and displacement would not overstress the system.
The goal is clear: the system must stay operational precisely when it is most needed — including after an earthquake.
Why FM200 (HFC-227ea)?
FM200 is an NFPA 2001 clean agent; it extinguishes by rapidly absorbing heat and breaking the chemical chain reaction, without lowering oxygen to dangerous levels:
- Fast discharge — typically reaches design concentration within 10 seconds.
- Occupied-space safety — concentration kept within the safety threshold (NOAEL).
- Residue-free — no residue, corrosion or clean-up burden; the space returns to service quickly.
- Compact storage — stored as a liquid in pressurised cylinders, suitable for tight technical spaces.
Turnkey Electro-Mechanical Delivery

Audible-visual alarms, a pre-discharge delay and manual release/abort stations were integrated. During commissioning, room-integrity tests verified the agent’s required hold time.
