What is the biggest fire risk in a paper/pulp mill?+
The biggest risk is the high fire load: paper, fiber, lint, and glue are easily ignitable, fast-spreading materials. In the paper machine's drying section the cylinder surfaces are hot; if oil and fiber dust (lint) accumulated in the exhaust ducts and on surfaces ignite, flame spreads fast along the ducts. In addition, machine drives, hydraulic, and lubrication units carry a pressurised-oil fire risk. So the risk is both a very high fire load and hot surface/oil accumulation; when these two combine, a small spark can turn into a large fire.
How is the paper machine drying section protected?+
The drying (dry end) section is the machine's most critical fire point due to hot cylinders and accumulated lint and oil. Protection starts with dust/lint management: effective aspiration, regular cleaning of accumulated dust, and control of oil leaks. On top of this, suppression is applied: wet sprinkler and, where needed, water spray/deluge are preferred for the dry end and air ducts, with a special nozzle layout targeting oil/lint accumulation inside the ducts. Local suppression is considered for hydraulic and lubrication units. For early detection, systems suited to dusty environments are used.
Why are jumbo reels and paper storage high-risk?+
Paper carries a very high fire load per unit volume, and in high-rack storage jumbo reels and palletized products form an enormous combustible mass. A fire rises fast within the rack; standard ceiling sprinklers alone are insufficient to cut this rising flame. So ESFR or in-rack sprinklers are used in high-rack paper storage; ESFR suppresses the flame with high-flow droplets and cuts its spread within the rack. Because reel winding gaps and packaging affect fire behavior, storage design is done per product type.
How are hydraulic, lubrication, and chemical risks managed?+
Paper machines use high-pressure hydraulic and large lubrication systems; a hose burst sprays oil as a pressurised mist that ignites easily if it reaches a hot surface. For these units, oil containment, local suppression, and foam where needed are applied. Pulp and bleaching processes involve chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and other chemicals; these are stored in separate, ventilated areas, monitored with gas detection, and addressed within process safety together with fire protection. Spark detection can be applied on fiber preparation and transport lines against foreign-object sparks.
