In a facility that produces gunpowder and explosives, fire safety is a different equation from any other building: here the danger is not only fire, but the chance that fire turns into an explosion within seconds. On the MKE Gunpowder Factory project, A-Pro Engineering equipped every building in the factory with an explosion-proof (Ex-proof) addressable fire detection and alarm system, aiming to see the danger before it can grow.

Why Ex-Proof? The Rules of an Explosive Atmosphere

In a gunpowder-production environment, ignitable dust, vapour and gas can be present in the air. In the international ATEX classification this means an “explosive atmosphere,” and it has one rule: no equipment that can produce a spark or a high surface temperature may be present.

  • A standard detector or call point can produce a tiny spark even during a fault — unacceptable in this environment.
  • Ex-proof equipment is certified either to produce no spark/heat at all (intrinsically safe) or to confine a possible explosion within its robust enclosure.

Every detector, call point and ancillary device used on the project was selected to this Ex-proof requirement.

Two-Layer Detection: Flame + Heat

In a fast-igniting environment, seeing a fire only after smoke has formed can be far too late. So two complementary detector types were used together:

  • Ex-proof flame detectors — sense the UV/IR radiation of the flame, seeing open flame within seconds before any smoke. Ideal for flash-type fires.
  • Ex-proof heat detectors — monitor abnormal rises in ambient temperature and catch developments outside a flame detector’s line of sight.

Together these two layers provide detection that is both very early and reliable, minimising false alarms.

Addressable System and Graphic Control Software

On a large factory campus, “there is a fire somewhere” is not enough; where it is matters critically. In an addressable system every detector has a unique address:

  • On alarm, the graphic control software shows in real time, on a factory plan, which building and which point the event started at.
  • The response team heads to the right point without losing seconds.
  • The system keeps event logs, providing traceability for audit and reporting.
