What is the biggest fire hazard in LPG/LNG facilities?+
The biggest hazard is the uncontrolled release and ignition of a large quantity of flammable gas. LPG is heavier than air; a leak forms a vapour cloud that pools near the ground and spreads, and can flash from a distant ignition source. The most destructive scenario is a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion): the wall of an LPG tank exposed to fire heats up, internal pressure rises, and the tank suddenly ruptures, creating a giant fireball and pressure wave. LNG is stored at cryogenic (very low) temperature; a spill carries both cold-damage risk and the risk of evaporating into a flammable cloud.
